BHEL to make defence products
Monday, April 7th, 2008Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) will set up a second plant at its Ranipet unit in Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs 200 crore. The plant will cater to the needs of defence and railway sectors. Mr A.V. Krishnan, general manger, said, “At this moment, we can not reveal the product line. Our board will finalise the products to be manufactured at the new plant by August.”
BHEL is likely to shift some of its products from its smaller units to Ranipet. The plant has a capacity to produce 10,000 MW power equipment and will ramp up the capacity to 15,000 MW by 2009. However, sources said the company has identified some products for the armed forces and is in discussion with the defence officials. BHEL is also considering making railway coaches from the Ranipet plant, sources added. Indian Railways is facing a shortage of rakes and the Salem steel plant, which is close to Ranipet ensures the proximity of the raw materials to the factory.
